Community Profile 

Mead is located on State Highway 92, and about one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 77, approximately 30 miles west of Omaha. The interchange of I-80 is 26 miles east of Mead.

LABOR: The total labor force in the area available for employment is approximately 300 workers. Present wage scales per hour available on request.

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Rail Union Pacific Railroad
  • Air Eight major and four commuter airlines serve Omaha, just 35 miles east. Four major airlines serve Lincoln. There is also a small airport at Wahoo with a 3,500-sq. ft., hard-surfaced runway, storage and maintenance available.
  • Truck Several interstate carriers and one intrastate carrier serve the community.

The history of taxation in Nebraska encourages profitability of industry's operation.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES: Mead has a Chairman-Board of Trustees form of government; part-time police officer; a 34-man volunteer fire department, with an insurance classification of 8 within corporate limits. Mead has a public library and approximately ninety-six percent of the city streets are paved.

GENERAL:
Financial One institution, Bank of Mead, with deposits in excess of $5.59 million.

Medical Saunders County Hospital in Wahoo serves many of the Mead residents. There are five physicians on staff, and several registered and practical nurses. Wahoo, just six miles west, has three dentists, one chiropractor and three veterinarians.

Housing There were twenty new homes and one apartment buildings built in the last six years with seventy percent of homes owner-occupied. A new subdivision is offering 12 new home lots.

Schools One public elementary, one junior / senior high school; University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Omaha, each about 30 miles from Mead.

RECREATION: Village facilities include:  two ball diamonds,  weight room facilities, a basketball court, and a public park.  Additional recreational facilities are available at Wahoo, six miles west. There is a public park, golf course,  tennis court, swimming pool and country club available for use by Mead residents. The Platte River is just seven miles east where swimming, fishing and boating are available.

INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT: The City of Mead is interested in securing industry for the community. The former ordinance plant is located south of the city. Much of this is ideal for industry. Premier Industries is located one mile south of Mead.

PLANT LOCATION SERVICES AVAILABLE: Omaha Public Power District's Area Development Department is ready, willing and able to provide pertinent information for all phases of plant location.  OPPD serves 611,000 persons (approximately 36 percent of Nebraska's population) in a 5,000-square-mile area bordered by 185 miles of Missouri River frontage. OPPD provides electric for 48 communities in this 13-county area including metropolitan Omaha.  OPPD's Area Development Department is interested in providing detailed information on sites, labor, transportation, utilities, markets and raw materials.
