WELCOME TO MEAD
POLICE The Village Police Marshall is Chief Jerry Carlson at 624-2056. If you are in need of immediate police assistance please dial 911 or call the Saunders County Sheriff dispatch at 443-1000. This is a part-time position. FIRE AND RESCUE Mike Coyle, Fire Chief and Terry Miller, Rescue Captain head the Mead Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. For non-emergency assistance leave a message at 624-3610, in case of a fire or rescue emergency dial 911 or call the Saunders County Sheriff dispatch at 443-1000. WATER AND SEWER Terral Brabec Utilities Supt., handles water and sewer. For utilities questions, contact Terral at 402-480-2596 or the Village Office at 402-624-2495. To begin service, a deposit of $50.00 is required and is refunded once you have a current payment history for 24 continuous months, or upon moving from the Village. Water and sewer services are billed monthly. Water meters are read the last week of the month. Bills are sent out by the first calendar day of the month. Payment is due the 15th of each month. After this date, water/sewer accounts are considered delinquent and will be assessed a $10.00 late fee and subject to disconnection of service. If service is disconnected, all past due amounts and late fees, plus a $50.00 re-connection fee will need to be paid prior to restoration of service ($65.00 off-duty hours, holidays or weekends). UTILITIES Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) supplies electricity at 402-346-4636. Aquila supplies natural gas at 800-303-0752. Windstream provides local telephone service at number is 800-284-7135. GARBAGE You have two options concerning garbage disposal. Contact: Waste Connections 800-279-7511 or 402-721-7511 OR Quality Disposal 402-642-9200. Recycling bins are located behind the Community Building on 4th Street. Dump Hours
Tree branches, weeds, leaves and grass clippings are the only items allowed. All loads will be checked. The dump is open to mead residents only at a charge of $2.00 per load, payable to the dumpmaster. All items are to be unbagged. BUILDING PERMITS A Building Permit is required to erect, enlarge or alter a structure including houses, garages, storage sheds, porches, fences and decks. You may pick up an application for a Building Permit at the Village Office. The Planning Commission reviews the applications at their regular meeting on the fourth Monday of the month. The Building Permit fee will be doubled if work is started without a permit. Building Permit Form STREETS Trees, which overhang streets and sidewalks, must be kept trimmed. A minimum of an 8-foot clearance over sidewalks and streets is required for proper snowplow and vehicle traffic as well as pedestrian traffic. After a snowfall of 2 inches or more, please remove any vehicles from the streets in order to expedite the snow removal process. Any vehicle that is not removed from the street within 24 hours will be ticketed and/or towed. Sidewalks must also be cleared of snow. PET LICENSE All dogs and cats must be licensed with the Village. Dogs must be kept under restraint (leashed or fenced). Accompanied by a current rabies certificate, licenses are purchased at the Village Office. License fees are as follows: spayed females and neutered males $3.00; intact males and females $5.00. Proof of spaying and neutering is also required. New tags are available in April and considered delinquent and subject to a “failure to license” ticket after May 1st. If an animal is impounded for running at large, the owner is responsible for an impoundment fee and boarding fees before the animal is released. LIBRARY The Public Library is located at 316 South Vine Street. Village Librarian is Vera Kuhr. Hours are Tues. 9:00 am – 11:00 am & 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Wed. 9:00 am – 11:00 am, Thurs. 9:00 am – 11:00 am & 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and Sat. 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Computers with internet and printers, copier, and fax machine are available for the public. The telephone number is (402) 624-6605. FACILITIES FOR RENT Meeting rooms in the Community Building are available for rent. The fee is $10 for the small meeting room only, $15 for the kitchen only, and $100 for the hall, small meeting room and kitchen. An additional deposit of $75 is required and is refunded after inspection of the building. There is no deposit required to rent the meeting room only. The park may be reserved at no charge. Contact the Village Office if you would like to reserve one of these facilities for your functions. Community Building Rental Agreement Community Building Rules Park Rental Agreement CHURCHES Churches include St. James Catholic, Mead Covenant, and Alma Lutheran. Various activities include C.C.D., Sunday School, AWANAS, WinGS, Pre-School, Choirs and numerous Adult and Youth groups. ORGANIZATIONS The Mead Ball Association sponsors Youth Baseball, Softball, Football, and Volleyball teams. Other organizations include Volunteer Fire/Rescue Squad Department, Mead Athletic Boosters, 4-H, Mead Development Committee, and Mead Ball Association. MEAD PUBLIC SCHOOLS Mead Public Schools is a Class D-1 school. It offers a low student to teacher ratio. Known for its academic offerings, they also offer several Fine Arts programs, Career Literacy studies, and several sports programs including Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track. Co-op programs include Softball, Wrestling, Baseball and Boys Golf. NEWSPAPERS Newspapers received in this area are the local Wahoo Newspaper, Omaha World Herald, Lincoln Journal Star, and Fremont Tribune. The Mead Messenger is also published each month. This is a newsletter from the Mead Village Board to the Village residents. It is distributed with the Mead Public Schools monthly newsletter to each household within the school district. During the summer months, the newsletter is mailed with utility bills to village residents only. BANKING The Bank of Mead offers two locations to serve customers as well as free online banking.
